Hair Color Mixing Chart: Level + Tone Rules
When mixing two hair dyes, the resulting level is the weighted average of both levels (a 7 + a 9 in equal parts gives an 8). The reflects interact according to the color wheel: similar tones (golden + copper) blend together, while opposite tones (ash + golden) neutralize each other. Understanding these rules is fundamental for predicting results.
Golden Rules for Mixing Hair Colors
Stay within 2-3 levels of difference between the shades you mix. Always use the same brand and line (mixing permanent with demi-permanent gives unpredictable results). Understand underlying pigments: when mixing ash with golden, you don't get "ash-golden" but a more neutral tone, because the blue in ash neutralizes the yellow in golden.
What Happens When You Mix Opposite Tones?
Opposite tones on the color wheel neutralize each other. Ash (blue) + golden (yellow) = neutral. Violet + golden = iridescent pearl. Red + matte (green) = warm neutral. This neutralization is the foundation of color correction: to eliminate an unwanted reflect, mix in its opposite. That's why ash cancels orange and violet cancels yellow.
Classic Color Mixes Every Colorist Should Know
| Shade A | Shade B | Ratio | Result | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7/1 (Ash Blonde) | 7/3 (Golden Blonde) | 1:1 | Neutral Beige Blonde | Ash and golden neutralize each other, creating a highly requested natural beige. |
| 6/3 (Dark Golden Blonde) | 6/4 (Dark Copper Blonde) | 2:1 | Dark Honey Blonde | Golden + copper are close warm tones. More golden gives a luminous honey tone. |
| 5/0 (Light Brown) | 5/6 (Light Red Brown) | 1:1 | Warm Chocolate Brown | The natural base softens the red intensity, giving a warm chocolate. |
| 8/1 (Light Ash Blonde) | 8/3 (Light Golden Blonde) | 2:1 | Light Champagne Blonde | More ash than golden gives a cool, elegant champagne tone. |
| 7/4 (Copper Blonde) | 7/6 (Red Blonde) | 1:1 | Intense Copper-Red Blonde | Copper and red are warm neighbors: they enhance each other. |
| 6/1 (Dark Ash Blonde) | 6/7 (Dark Matte Blonde) | 1:2 | Dark Green-Ash Blonde | Ash and matte reinforce each other. Ideal for neutralizing persistent orange. |
