Pravana numbering system

Pravana ChromaSilk organizes shades in a hybrid format:

  • Naturals: Level + N (5N = light natural brown, 8N = light natural blonde)
  • With reflect: Level.Reflect (6.1 = dark ash blonde, 7.4 = medium copper blonde)
  • Reflects: .1 = ash, .2 = beige, .3 = golden, .4 = copper, .5 = mahogany, .6 = red, .7 = violet, .8 = pearl, .9 = smokey
  • Blended neutrals: NT (7NT = neutral blonde, 5NT3 = light neutral golden brown)

ChromaSilk features silk and keratin technology for extra shine and softness in the final result.

VIVIDS does not use this system. They are direct dyes: they go by colour name (Magenta, Wild Orchid, Blue Topaz) because they have no level and no reflect. They are applied without developer over pre-lightened hair, so the result depends on the starting level, not on a number from the chart.

Pravana ChromaSilk incorporates liquid silk and keratin technology in its formulation, providing extra shine and softness. It is very popular in US and Latin American salons for its vibrant coppers and reds. Its chart spans fifteen tonal families, from the naturals through pearl, smokey and blended neutrals.

VIVIDS shades are a different story: being direct dyes, they have no equivalent in an oxidative range. You pick them by colour, comparing against the direct dyes of another brand, not by translating a code.

Because they do not have one. VIVIDS is semi-permanent colour without developer: it does not lift — with no developer it cannot raise the level — it only deposits pigment on hair that has already been lightened. Note that depositing can still darken: a Grape or a Black over a level 10 lowers the visible depth, even though it never touches the melanin underneath. The final colour comes from the level you took the hair to beforehand, so the same tube gives one result on a level 9 and a different one on a level 7.

That is why VIVIDS are listed here by colour name and the swatch you see is approximate: it helps you recognise the shade, not calculate an equivalence.

Semi-permanent does not mean it washes out clean either: Pravana states up to 30 washes of vibrant colour, and in practice reds, blues and greens leave a stain on pre-lightened hair well beyond that. Tell your client before, not after.
