Best shampoo for colored hair: 60 washes is not 60 days

Blendsor

Updated: Oct 19, 2026
Two locks of the same red-brown hair side by side on natural linen, one freshly colored and one faded and dulled, in soft daylight

We read the eight official pages and put them in one table. On their US pages, two of these bottles print the number 60 and do not mean anything like the same thing. And two of the most expensive promise nothing about how long your color lasts.

Tell me what you’re dealing with and I’ll show you the one we picked for it.

L'Oréal Paris · Shampoo

L'Oréal Paris Elvive Color Vibrancy Protecting Shampoo

It comes in more than one formula: the two we read, Color Vive and Color Vibrancy, give different figures and say which other bottle they were measured with.

  • Contains sulfates
  • Drugstore price
What its label says

✓ Figure with a declared method

60 days or 40 washes · Each formula gives its own. Color Vibrancy: four washes a week using the system of shampoo and conditioner. Color Vive: an instrumental test with the shampoo and the mask, after five applications.

Up to 60 days sealed-in color vibrancy* / *Based on 4 washings per week using the system of shampoo and conditioner. / Formulated with anti-oxidants and UV filters / AQUA / WATER / EAU, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, COCO-BETAINE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, GLYCOL DISTEARATE, DIMETHICONE...

The seal says what each brand publishes about color duration. It does not measure whether the product works: a bottle with no figure can be excellent at its own job.

Why we picked it

Color Vibrancy's figure was measured with its conditioner, and Color Vive's, with its mask. Check which one you have and use it with the conditioner or mask that goes with it. Elvive contains sulfates in both formulas, like two others of the eight, and publishes that on its own ingredient list.

Other picks

  • If you avoid sulfates and want to know what that means Living Proof Restore Shampoo

It is the only one saying what it means by "sulfate free", naming the two it leaves out. The rest leave it on the label without defining it. Note: it promises nothing about color lasting, its figures are about breakage.

  • If your hair comes from bleaching Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

Its figures are about repair and breakage, not color: on color it only says it is safe. That is honest and it is exactly what you want if your problem is breakage. It also publishes how many washes each bottle gives, which no other does.

  • Read its label before its number Pantene Pro-V Radiant Color Shine Shampoo

Its own brand publishes an article recommending you choose sulfate free products, and the ingredient list it used to publish for this shampoo on its Canadian page included two. Today neither that page nor the US one shows the list. It is drugstore priced.

Normal color treated hair on a tight budget, counting on also using the bottle its figure was measured with.

  • The two formulas we read give different figures: Color Vibrancy promises up to 60 days and Color Vive, up to 40 washes
  • Color Vibrancy's 60 days are around 34 washes at four a week, so they do not compare directly with a figure given in washes
  • The note under Color Vive's 40 washes mentions an instrumental test with its shampoo and mask after five applications, and does not say how it gets to 40
  • Both formulas publish their ingredient list on their page, with the sulfate in second place and a silicone, dimethicone, also on the list

Before you buy

Four of the eight give a color-duration figure, and three tie it to another bottle.

  • On their US pages, Redken labels up to 60 washes, with no condition beside it; Elvive, up to 60 days at four washes a week: about 34 washes.
  • If you buy a shampoo for its figure, use it with the bottle it was measured with.
Out of eight shampoos for colored hair
  • Give a figure for how long color lasts 4 products and only three of those four say under what condition they measured it
  • Give no figure about color at all 4 products two of them do not even promise to preserve it: they say they do not spoil it
How we researched it

Two bottles with the same number that do not mean the same

Here is what came out of putting the eight labels in one table.

On their US pages, two of these shampoos print the number 60, and there is almost double the distance between them.

  • One promises up to 60 washes, with no condition beside it. No asterisk, no test cited, nothing.
  • The other promises up to 60 days, and its small print explains exactly what that means: four washes a week, using its shampoo with its conditioner.

Do the maths and those 60 days are around 34 washes. Anyone comparing the two labels on the shelf thinks they are comparing the same thing, and they are comparing one figure with almost double another.

The interesting part is not which one wins, it is which one can be checked. One of the two gives you everything you need to verify it. The other gives you a round number and nothing else.

And the 60-day shampoo is L’Oréal’s Elvive Color Vibrancy. Its other formula, Color Vive, prints up to 40 washes, with a note about a test with its shampoo and mask after five applications. Same Elvive, another figure and another bottle in the test: check which one you are holding.

Three of these figures are not for the shampoo alone

And this repeats across the whole category, not in one odd case.

Of the four bottles that give a figure, three tie it to another bottle from their line. One talks about the system of shampoo and conditioner, and in its other formula about shampoo and mask; another gives its figure “when used with” its conditioner; the third talks about a test after applying shampoo and conditioner.

And there is another that gives no figure but does explain its claim: it measured it with the shampoo plus a mask. Its line about smoother hair was measured with three products at once.

You buy one bottle and the number comes from two, sometimes three. That is not abusive small print, it is normal in cosmetics. But nobody tells the buyer, and it explains “it did not last what it said” better than anything else.

A woman in her own bathroom, seen from behind, lathering her freshly colored red-brown hair

Very hot water takes more color out than whichever shampoo you use.

”Safe for colored hair” is not the same as “protects color”

This is the point that earns this page its place, and the one that costs most to ignore.

Two of the eight, among the most expensive and best known, promise absolutely nothing about how long your color lasts.

  • One only says it is safe for colored hair. All its figures are about repair and breakage.
  • In the other, the word color does not appear once among the benefits on its page. It only turns up in its question section, to say it is safe for color treated hair.

Safe means it does not spoil it. Preserving it is another thing. The industry sells the two as if they were one, and there are “best for keeping your color” lists that include products whose own maker says no such thing anywhere.

It does not mean they are bad shampoos. It means that if your problem is color going, those two are not built for that.

Three of the eight carry sulfates

In a category where the most searched thing is exactly the opposite.

Five state they carry none. Three do carry them, and two of those three publish it on their own ingredient list, which is the honest way.

The case worth telling separately: one of these brands publishes an article of its own recommending you choose sulfate free products, and for the shampoo it recommends in that same article, the list it used to publish itself in another country included two. Today that list no longer appears on that country’s page or on the US one.

And a reading trap, so nobody uses it backwards: one of the shampoos that does not carry sulfates has a salt on its list with that word in the name. It is not a surfactant, and it contradicts nothing. Anyone flagging it as a gotcha has misread it.

What this page is not

We have not tested these shampoos. We have no lab and no test panel, and none of the eight brands publishes a measurement you could compare against the others on equal terms.

What we did is read the eight official pages, small print included, and put them side by side. Out of that comes what this page knows: the figures on this shelf cannot be compared with each other, because each was measured with a different ruler.

And the thing no label has room for: how long your color lasts depends mostly on what color went on, and on what hair. A tone far from your base fades sooner whatever your shampoo does. The person who colors it knows that, and that conversation is worth more than any of these eight bottles.

What people ask

How long does color really last with a shampoo for colored hair?

It depends which figure you look at and what they measured it with, because not all of them are comparable.

  • Four of these eight give a figure, and not in the same unit: washes, days or weeks, and one changes unit depending on its formula.
  • To compare them they need the same unit, and one of them does not say under what condition it got its own.
  • The other four give no figure about color at all.

Do you need to use the conditioner from the same brand?

For the figure to mean what it says, in most cases yes.

  • Of the four that give a number on their US websites, three tie it to their conditioner: two say they measured it with it, and the third sets it as a condition of use.
  • Elvive, in its other formula, Color Vive, ties it to the mask.
  • One of those with no figure measures its color claim with the shampoo plus a mask.
  • You buy one bottle and the number comes from two products, or three: that is normal in cosmetics, and worth knowing before you buy.

Does a shampoo "safe for colored hair" preserve the color?

Not necessarily: safe means it does not spoil it, and preserving it is another thing.

  • Two of the eight, from well-known brands, promise nothing about how long color lasts: theirs is about repair or less breakage.
  • Olaplex No.4 only says it is safe; in Living Proof Restore the word color does not appear among its benefits.
  • Before buying, check whether the brand promises the color will last or only that it will not spoil it.

Do shampoos for colored hair carry sulfates?

Three of these eight do, in a category where the most searched thing is the opposite.

  • Five state they carry none.
  • Of the three that do, two publish it on their own ingredient list; for the third, the only list we found was on its page for another country, which no longer shows it.
  • Watch a reading trap: one of the sulfate free ones has a salt on its list with that word in the name, which is not the same as a surfactant.

How often should you wash colored hair?

The pages barely say: only one of the eight gives a frequency.

  • It says daily, though it says it in its question section and not in the instructions. The rest declare none.
  • What does change between them is the number of latherings: one asks for two always, another leaves them optional for very dry hair.
  • If your color goes fast, that frequency is set by whoever did it.

Is the expensive shampoo for colored hair worth it?

What you buy with the difference is usually formula and detail, not a higher number.

  • Olaplex No.4 and Living Proof Restore, at salon prices, give no color figure but state things others do not: what they mean by sulfate free and how many washes a bottle gives.
  • Three of the eight shampoos tie their figure to another bottle in their line, and two of those three are drugstore ones.
  • A shampoo is home care between appointments; which one suits your color is for whoever did it to say.

What has changed on this page

  • We also read the Elvive shampoo page for Spain: it is another formula, Color Vive, with another figure (up to 40 washes, measured with its shampoo and mask). What we say about this shampoo, in the list and in the recommendation, now covers both formulas.
  • Pantene no longer shows its ingredient list on the Canadian page: we now cite the July archived copy for the list and its US article for the duration figure.
  • The page moves to the new format, with each figure next to the condition it was measured under.
  • The eight official pages are read and the condition each brand measures its figure under is noted.
