Our pick
OUAI Hair GlossFive minutes in the shower after shampoo, no peroxide, and its page says it protects against heat. And its shine figure says where it comes from: a survey of 103 people. According to the brand, the result lasts up to three washes.
-
On a budget
L'Oréal Paris EverPure Glossing 5-Min Lamination Hair MaskIt is the drugstore-priced one: five minutes, rinsed out, after shampoo and conditioner. In the US it sells as EverPure; in Spain it sells as Elvive, and the two sites publish different ingredient lists. How long it lasts changes with each country's site: 5 days per use in the US, 5 washes in the UK, 10 shampoos in Spain.
-
If your colorist works with Kérastase
Kérastase Chroma Absolu Soin Acide Chroma GlossIt is sold through salons: your colorist knows it and can tell you whether it fits the routine they recommend. One or two minutes in place of your mask and, according to its US site, once a week or as often as your hairdresser advises. Its Spanish site is the only one of these product pages with a figure on color at six weeks, measured together with its shampoo.
-
If you only have a minute
Oribe Mirror Rinse Glass Hair TreatmentIt is the shortest of the seven: up to a minute, in place of conditioner, once a week. Its page says the shine lasts 15 washes and its blog talks about a week; keep both in mind and decide.
We read all 8 official pages verified on we have not tested them, and the commission does not decide what appears here How we do it
This is us: we make Blendsor, the colour formula app for salons. We spend our days reading hair colour technical sheets, so reading labels is the job.
Before you buy
Colorless does not always mean peroxide-free. Two of the glosses we read contain hydrogen peroxide, the developer that activates hair dyes. One, Kristin Ess Crystal Quartz, we left off the list: it is a two-bottle kit you mix, and its brand asks for an allergy test before every use, as with hair color. The other, Redken, stays: it gives no percentage, warns about it on its professional site and asks for gloves. If you see it in the ingredient list, send your colorist a photo before you buy it: they know what is already in your hair.
What is your case?
The seal says what each brand publishes about color duration. It does not measure whether the product works: a bottle with no figure can be excellent at its own job.

An at-home gloss can contain peroxide
Can an at-home gloss contain what activates a hair dye? Two of the ones we read do: they contain hydrogen peroxide, the developer used in hair dyes. They are Kristin Ess and Redken, and each brand handles it differently:
- Kristin Ess says so in its FAQ, with the percentage. Its clear gloss, Crystal Quartz, comes in two bottles you mix, and its page asks for an allergy test before every use, just like a dye. That is why it is not on this list, even though its brand says this clear version does not change your color: the brand itself treats it as hair color.
- Redken lists it third among its ingredients, with no percentage. Its professional site carries a warning and asks for gloves. The consumer page we read does not show that warning. This one is on the list, on one condition: that your colorist has recommended it.
Neither brand hides it. What changes is what to do if a bottle you are eyeing contains it. If the ingredient list says hydrogen peroxide, do not treat it as just another conditioner: show it to your colorist before you buy it. A photo of the list is enough, and they know what is already in your hair. Kristin Ess says it in its FAQ: if your colorist says no, trust that they have a good reason.
One more detail: only one of the seven says in writing that it is colorless, Moroccanoil, and it says so on its Thai site. The rest promise shine and say nothing about tone either way.
Why no gloss that promises color made this list
A lot of gloss lists mix the ones that only add shine with the ones that tint. We kept them apart on purpose.
A tinted gloss leaves color on your hair. That is a color service, even when it comes in an in-shower bottle, and the result depends on the base underneath: what is already in your hair, what was done to it and how it turned out. Only your colorist knows that base.
L’Oréal Professionnel, which in its guide calls gloss a semi-permanent color, writes that it is conventionally applied by professionals in a salon and that applying it at home is not recommended.
So this page does a smaller, clearer job: keeping the shine of the color you already had done, between appointments. If you want to refresh or change your color, that is a salon gloss, and a conversation to have with your colorist.

The gloss that changes your color is done here. The one at home promises to keep the shine between appointments.
L’Oréal Paris’s gloss does not last the same in every country
The L’Oréal Paris five-minute treatment is the drugstore-priced gloss on this list. In the US it is sold as EverPure, and its site publishes a different ingredient list. We read it on four of the brand’s sites and each says it lasts a different length of time:
- In the US, 5 days.
- In the UK, 5 washes, with a note saying it was measured with the range’s three-product routine.
- In Spain, sold as Elvive, 10 shampoos, with no word on how that was measured.
- In Brazil, the line sells a different format, a spray, and talks about 6 washes.
Different sites and different tests, each with its own country, so a longevity figure only holds for the bottle and routine it was measured with. If you use the treatment on its own, neither the Spanish nor the US site says how its figure was measured, and the UK one measured it with the three-product routine. Repeat it when your hair starts to look dull.
What is actually studied: pH
None of these seven cites an independent study you can read. What does have independent studies behind it is part of the idea several of them rely on: an acidic product can help the cuticle close. That this means more shine is what the brands say; the paper we cite does not measure it.
A paper in a trichology journal, with no conflict of interest declared, puts it this way: alkaline pH can raise friction between fibers and damage the cuticle; after a high-pH shampoo, a low-pH conditioner may help the cuticle scales close. It does not measure the shine of any gloss, so it confirms none of the figures on this page. It is the same idea Redken, Kérastase and L’Oréal Paris write on their pages when they link acid or pH to a sealed cuticle.
Its authors also ask for the pH to be printed on the shampoo label. None of the seven product pages on this list gives its pH value.
From one minute to seven
They promise shine, but the time they ask for varies a lot, and that decides which one you will actually use:
- A minute or less: Oribe, in place of conditioner.
- One or two: Kérastase, in place of your mask.
- Five: OUAI, Living Proof and the L’Oréal Paris one.
- Five to seven: Moroccanoil.
The one with peroxide sits apart. Redken gives different timings on its sites, and with that one, when and how is for your colorist to say.
Among the six without peroxide, the best one is the one that fits your routine.
Who owns which brand
Before writing, we checked who is behind each bottle. Three of the seven belong to L’Oréal: L’Oréal Paris, Kérastase and Redken. Oribe belongs to Kao, according to the footer of its site. For the other three brands we did not find that information on their sites, and we will not guess.
It helps you read the list in context: among these seven, the three that tie an acid to sealing the cuticle or the hair’s surface all come from the same company, L’Oréal. With seven products we cannot say whether that holds across the category.
How this page was put together
To write it we read the official pages of eight products, some of them on several countries’ sites, put them in one table and cross-checked what they say. We have not tried the products on hair: that would take a test panel we do not have, and we would rather say so. What the cross-check adds is what no single label tells you: that the bottle next to it contains peroxide, or that how long it lasts changes from one country to another.
An at-home gloss looks after the shine of the color you had done, but it does not replace your colorist. If your color looks dull or off, show it to them before buying anything: what you need may be another appointment.
What people ask
Does a clear gloss change your hair color?
None of the seven promises to change it, and that is what defines this list: they promise shine. Only Moroccanoil says in writing that it is colorless, on its Thai site, and the L'Oréal Paris one in Spain lists two colorants without saying whether they leave any tone. A tinted gloss is something else: it leaves color on your hair and is a service best left to your colorist, who knows what base you have underneath.
How long does an at-home gloss last?
What the brands say runs from three washes to fifteen, and they rarely explain how they measured it. OUAI and Living Proof talk about three washes; Oribe, 15 washes on its page and a week on its blog; the L'Oréal Paris one, from 5 days to 10 shampoos depending on the country. Plan on repeating it, and remember a salon gloss is a different service.
Is it better to get a gloss at the salon?
If what you want is to change or refresh your color, yes. L'Oréal Professionnel, which in its guide calls gloss a semi-permanent color, writes that it is conventionally applied by professionals in a salon and that applying it at home is not recommended. The six on this page without peroxide are something else: rinse-out treatments, like a mask, for keeping the shine between appointments. The one with peroxide is worth talking over with your colorist first.
Does gloss go before or after conditioner?
It depends on the bottle, and among the six without peroxide there are at least three ways. Oribe and Kérastase go in place of conditioner or mask. Living Proof is mixed in the hand with conditioner. The L'Oréal Paris one goes after shampoo and conditioner, like OUAI on dry or curly hair. The one with peroxide, Redken, is left out of this answer: how and when is for your colorist to tell you.
Does a gloss contain peroxide?
Some do. Two of the glosses we read contain hydrogen peroxide, the developer that activates hair dyes. Kristin Ess Crystal Quartz is a two-bottle kit you mix and asks for an allergy test before every use: that is why it is not on this list. Redken lists it third, with no percentage, and its professional site asks for gloves. The other six do not list it among their ingredients.
How soon can I use it after coloring?
Ask whoever colored your hair, who knows what they did. The pages of the six that contain no peroxide give no waiting time, which does not mean there is none: it is decided by looking at your hair, not the label. With Redken, the one with peroxide, when is for your colorist to tell you.
