Five of these eight brands publish some method behind their figures, so the problem is not that they do not measure. The problem is what against. Two of them measured the mask together with their shampoo, not the mask alone, and compared it against a non-conditioning shampoo. One of those two has a detail that says it all: the shampoo that produced four of its five figures shows as discontinued on its own page. And of the eight, only one states it tested on bleached hair, which is exactly the hair this page is about.

Most of them measure something. Almost none says against what

Here is what we did not expect when we put the eight pages in one table.

Most of these brands do run tests. That was the prejudice we started with, and it turned out to be false. They publish figures, and several explain where they come from. The problem is not that they do not measure.

The problem is what against. Two of them did not measure the mask alone: they measured the mask together with their shampoo, and compared the pair against a non-conditioning shampoo. That is, against the worst available option. With that reference, almost anything comes out ahead.

And one goes further. Its shine figure was not obtained with the mask but with an oil from the same line. The brand says so itself, in its own footnote. Only the footnote sits where footnotes usually sit.

The shampoo from the test is no longer in the catalogue

This is the detail that says most about the whole category, and it is in plain sight on the brand’s own site.

One of these masks got four of its five figures by using it alongside a specific shampoo. That shampoo shows as discontinued on the same page, in its “complete your routine” section.

Which means the test backing what it promises can no longer be repeated with what the brand catalogues today. It is not a trick, and it is probably not even deliberate. It is what happens when figures stay on a page years after the product they were measured with leaves the catalogue.

Only one says it tested on bleached hair

And this is what should matter most on a page that is about exactly that.

Of the eight, only one states its test was run on bleached tresses. It is in the small print of its first claim, and you have to go looking for it.

Careful with what that figure measures and what it does not: it is hydration that lasts through washes, not rebuilding. The same page states the product carries no protein. It is honest, and it is exactly the kind of precision that vanishes when someone reduces eight products to a list of stars.

The rest talk about “chemically treated” or “color treated” hair, which covers bleaching without naming it, and two name it in their claim but without saying they measured on that hair.

Protein or water: not the same, and not interchangeable

This list has one from each end, and that helps explain the whole category.

One expressly states it carries no protein and what it sells is lasting hydration. Another puts protein at the center and says it is needed right after coloring or chemically treating hair.

They are not rivals, they are different things:

If hair breaks, structure is missing. That is where protein comes in.
If it feels rough, looks dull and frizzes, water is missing. That is where hydration comes in.
If both happen at once, which is normal after bleaching, you have to alternate.

That balance is not decided by a label. It is decided by whoever looks at your hair and knows how far it was pushed.

Two nearly identical names that are not the same ingredient

A small detail that changes whole comparisons.

Two of these products carry ingredients whose names start the same and are different things. One is a maleic acid derivative, from the family studied for acting on the internal bonds of hair. The other is a silicone with amino groups, working on the surface.

They share the first two words of the name and little else. If you ever read that two jars “carry the same ingredient”, check the name is complete.

What research has actually measured

This needs precision, because it is where people overstate in both directions.

There is published work that tested agents from that chemical family on bleached hair. They improved the surface: it came out more regular, with better placed scales. They did not increase the sulfur bridges in the cortex, which is the deep structure.

And here is the nuance that almost always gets lost: the authors expressly leave open that it could happen in the cuticle. The negative result is limited to the cortex, not to the whole hair.

In plain terms: what you feel and see in the mirror is real. Getting back the hair you had before bleaching is not.

What this page is not

We have not tested these masks. We have no lab and no test panel, and faking a test that does not exist would be worse than saying so.

What we did is read the eight official pages, small print included, and put them side by side. Out of that comes the one thing this page knows and you will not see in a standard list: the problem with these figures is not that they are missing, it is what they were measured against.

And the usual point, which matters more here than anywhere: a mask maintains and improves what you already have. It does not undo a lightening job that went too far. If your hair breaks as you comb it, that conversation is with whoever bleaches it, and it is worth more than any of these eight jars.
