Wella Color Charm Demi-Permanent Chart: 20 shades with level

Color Charm Demi-Permanent is the ammonia-free crème demi in Wella’s Color Charm range (US market). Wella relaunched it with a 21-shade palette: here are the 20 shades with a level, each with its reflect and swatch, checked against Wella’s official user guide and the live catalogs of the Wella US store and Sally Beauty. Today 3VV is missing from the Wella US store; Sally Beauty lists it. Shade 21 is Clear, which only adds shine and stays out of the table.

The official mix is 1:2 with Color Charm 10 volume cream developer, processed for 10 to 20 minutes with no heat. Use it to tone highlights, gloss, refresh mid-lengths and ends, or blend gray.

It shares codes with the permanent line (7N, 6N, 10A) but not the names or the formula: this one is ammonia-free and runs on 10 volume, so don’t swap one for the other with the same recipe. Compared with Color Touch, same 1:2 ratio, but with a single 10 volume (3%) developer instead of the Color Touch emulsions. The liquid permanent is in the Color Charm chart, and T18, T14 and the rest of the toners are in the Wella toner chart.

How to read a Color Charm Demi shade

Same as the permanent, LEVEL + LETTERS: 9NA = level 9, natural ash (Light Natural Ash Blonde).

  • N neutral, the base for gray.
  • A ash, to cut warmth.
  • G gold and WG warm gold.
  • CB cool blonde (cool beige).
  • RR intense red, VV intense violet and BBL blue black.

One to watch: 7RR carries intense-red letters and sits in the red family, but Wella names it Light Copper, so the converter treats it as a red copper.

Watch the adjectives: in the browns, Wella names the demi one step lighter than the permanent for the same number (4N is Light Neutral Brown in the demi and Medium Brown in the permanent). Go by the number, not the name.

Everything you need to know

1:2: one part color to two parts Color Charm 10 volume cream developer, the one the official guide calls for. Process for 10 to 20 minutes with no heat; Wella says it can also go on damp hair.

As with any oxidative color, do the preliminary skin test in the package directions first. The guide also says to check the scalp before the service and not to proceed if there is irritation, sensitivity, itching or redness.

Wella positions it to color or blend gray, and calls its N shades ideal for covering gray. With more than 50% gray, it says to mix equal parts of an N shade with your chosen tone. If you prefer a permanent, there is the Color Charm permanent.

Yes, Wella recommends it for toning and glossing. On porous hair, the guide warns you may need a shade 1-2 levels lighter than the result you want, because the fiber grabs more pigment. A strand test first saves surprises. If you are after T18 or T14, they are in the Wella toner chart.

Wella quotes up to 24 washes, depending on hair type. After a chemical relaxer, the guide says to wait 2 weeks, check the scalp and porosity and run a strand test: if the hair is brittle or breaking, the result may come out more intense than expected. It can go on the same day as a lightener or perm, but Wella says not to proceed if the hair is overly porous or damaged.
