The quick rule: Koleston when you need lift or up to 100% gray coverage; Color Touch (ammonia-free) when you want to tone blondes, refresh, or add shine without lifting.

Wella uses a slash notation to separate level and reflect: 7/1 means level 7, ash reflect. The first number after the slash is the primary reflect, the second (if present) is secondary.

Wella numbering system

Wella Professionals organizes shades as level/reflect:

  • Level (1-10): Color depth. 1 = black, 10 = lightest blonde.
  • Primary reflect: First digit after the slash. /0 = natural, /1 = ash, /3 = gold, /4 = red, /5 = mahogany, /6 = violet, /7 = brown.
  • Secondary reflect: Second digit (optional). /43 = red gold, /16 = ash violet.

Koleston Perfect ME+ is the permanent line: lifts and deposits, ideal for gray coverage and level changes. Color Touch is demi-permanent: deposits only, ideal for toning blondes and refreshing color.

Koleston Perfect ME+ is permanent color: it lifts natural hair, deposits pigment and, per Wella's global manual, gives up to 100% gray coverage and up to 5 levels of lift. Mixed with developer. Color Touch is demi-permanent: it only deposits color without lifting. Ideal for toning blondes, refreshing color between services, and adding shine.

The number before the slash is the level (depth). The number after is the reflect (tone). For example, 7/1 = level 7 (medium blonde) with reflect 1 (ash). If there are two digits after the slash (7/43), the first is the primary reflect (red) and the second is secondary (gold).

For Koleston Perfect, Wella's global manual uses Welloxon Perfect 20 vol (6%) for going darker, tone-on-tone or 1 tone lighter. On the 1:1 mixes (Pure Naturals, Rich Naturals, Vibrant Reds and Deep Browns), 30 vol gives 2 tones lighter and 40 vol 3. Special Blonde mixes 1:2, with 30 vol for 3 tones lighter and 40 vol for 4-5. Color Touch mixes 1:2 with its own emulsion; Wella US's Color Touch article uses the 1.9% (6 volume) or the 4% (13 volume) one.

No. This chart is exclusively for Wella Professionals (salon use). Wella drugstore products (Koleston, Wellaton) use different formulations and numbering. They are not comparable to professional lines.

Yes. Color Touch is an ammonia-free demi-permanent used as a toner: it only deposits color without lifting. Salons use it to tone blondes, neutralize warm tones and add shine. Unlike Koleston Perfect (permanent), Color Touch does not lift.

To tone blondes with Color Touch: 1) Lighten to the level you need. 2) Mix Color Touch with Color Touch Emulsion 1:2 (Wella US's Color Touch article uses the 1.9% / 6 volume one for toning). 3) Apply to towel-dried damp hair. 4) Process 20 minutes without heat or 15 with heat, as in that same article, watching the tone.
