Best Bond Repair Treatment: Olaplex vs K18 and Six More
Olaplex, K18 or the drugstore one? For most people, Olaplex No.3PLUS; for freshly bleached hair, K18; on a budget, L'Oréal Paris EverPure Bond Repair+. Below, which bond (the links that hold hair together on the inside) each of the eight treatments we compared says it repairs, and what sits behind each claim.

Our recommendation
-
Our pick
Olaplex No.3PLUS Complete Repair TreatmentIts bond ingredient is one of the few studied outside the brand, though the two independent studies we found do not agree on whether it rebuilds from the inside. And it fits most routines if you have three minutes before shampoo: every 1 to 3 washes, mid-priced and protein-free.
-
If you want to spend little
L'Oréal Paris EverPure Bond Repair+ Pre-ShampooIt is the drugstore-priced one and the step that completes its own range: if you already use its shampoo and conditioner, this is the one missing. The figures the brand gives were measured with it as part of a routine, not with the pre-shampoo alone. It sells as Elvive in Spain, EverPure in the US and Elseve in Brazil.
-
For freshly bleached hair
K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair MaskIt is one of the two that say which bond they repair, and its test was run on bleached swatches with the product alone, though it does not say what it compared against. Its brand recommends it for the first 4 to 6 washes after a salon service.
-
If you are in a hurry in the shower
Joico Defy Damage In A Flash 7-Second Bond BuilderIt is the fastest of the eight: a seven-second rinse-off. The brand does not publish its ingredients and asks you to keep it off the scalp. In return, its figure says how and against what it was measured: up to 20 times more resistance to combing breakage, on damaged hair and against untreated hair.
-
Skip it if you will not use its whole line
Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In TreatmentIts most striking figure, a year of damage in one use, was measured with four products from the same line and against undamaged hair. If you already use that line, it is the leave-in step that completes it, which is how it was measured.
We read all 8 official pages verified on we have not tested them, and the commission does not decide what appears here How we do it
This is us: we make Blendsor, the colour formula app for salons. We spend our days reading hair colour technical sheets, so reading labels is the job.
Before you buy
Of the eight, only two say which bond they repair. K18 names the protein chains and the sulfur bridges; Living Proof tells three types apart and warns that one is only repaired with heat. The other six say "bonds" without saying which. Three of them, all from L'Oréal, rest their claim on citric acid, and a study signed by L'Oréal's own researchers puts that acid's effect down, probably, to a mix of mechanisms, among them removing calcium, pH and strengthening the weaker, non-covalent links. Practical advice: if the label does not say which bond, read its claim as "stronger hair", which is no small thing.
What is your case?
The seal says what each brand publishes about color duration. It does not measure whether the product works: a bottle with no figure can be excellent at its own job.

Two name the bond. The other six do not
Put the eight pages in one table and one word keeps coming back, almost never explained: bonds.
Only two say which ones they repair. K18 talks about protein chains and sulfur bridges. Living Proof tells three kinds of link apart and warns that one of them is only repaired with heat. The other six say “bonds”, or “all three bonds”, and leave it there.
It matters because hair is held together by several kinds of link, and they do not all break the same way. Bleaching mostly attacks the sulfur bridges, the ones that carry the structure. Weaker links come apart with water and form again as hair dries, every single day, bleached or not.
So when a label does not say which bond it repairs, read it as a promise of stronger hair. That is a useful promise, though a shorter one than repairing a specific bond.
The No.3 in the comparison is gone from Olaplex’s site
Three comparisons on these pages point at a competitor. One names it; the other two do not.
- The L’Oréal Paris pre-shampoo in Spain says it is as effective as a three-step Olaplex routine, and names the bottles: No.3, No.4 and No.5. The price it quotes for that routine is from 2022.
- Living Proof compares itself with “the leading bond builder”, without saying which.
- The same L’Oréal range in Brazil compares itself with a treatment at a set price, without saying which.
But the No.3 in that comparison is no longer on Olaplex’s site. The brand has replaced it with No.3PLUS, which is exactly the one on this page. The comparison is still on the label, but the rival it was measured against is not the one Olaplex sells today.
For anyone buying, the takeaway is simple: choose by how it is used and what your hair needs, not by who it compares itself with.

Section by section, on the lengths that took the bleach. The root has not been through it yet.
What the citric acid study actually measured
Three of the eight rest their claim on citric acid: the L’Oréal Paris pre-shampoo, Redken and Kérastase, three of L’Oréal’s four. And three L’Oréal researchers have published a study on that acid in bleached, colored or permed hair, in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. It does not test any specific product, but it shows how the company itself explains what the acid does.
The study puts the improvement down, probably, to a mix of routes, including:
- removing calcium from the hair,
- the pH of the treatment,
- strengthening the protein’s network of non-covalent links, the weaker ones mentioned above.
It measures more cross-links between the proteins inside the hair and a firmer fiber that survives many more repeated strains before it breaks. That is real. What its abstract does not mention is sulfur bridges. The labels of those three products, though, talk about repairing or reconnecting bonds. Both can be true at once, though a label that talks about repairing bonds promises more than the study measures. And it is worth knowing that the study is signed by the brand’s own researchers.
The two independent studies do not agree
Outside the brands there is little published, and what there is does not line up.
A 2021 paper tested the chemical family of the Olaplex ingredient on bleached hair. It found no more sulfur bridges inside the fiber. It did see a smoother, more orderly surface, and its authors leave open that the effect could happen in the outer layer.
Another from 2024 tested Olaplex No.0, which carries the same ingredient, and did find more sulfur bridges. In the same work, K18 formed a layer over the fiber.
We are not going to pick one. Independent science is still arguing over whether the Olaplex ingredient rebuilds from the inside. What both saw is that treated hair changes: smoother on the outside in one case, with more sulfur bridges in the other.
Seven seconds, five minutes, or left in
They promise the same thing and get used in very different ways. In practice, that weighs more than the label:
- Before shampoo: Olaplex, Kérastase and the L’Oréal Paris one.
- Quick rinse-off: Joico, in seconds, and the L’Oréal Professionnel serum.
- Left in: K18, Redken and Living Proof, which also asks you to wait before drying.
The best treatment is the one you will actually use. If your routine is five minutes in the shower, a pre-shampoo that asks you to wait will not last long in your bathroom.
Four of the eight come from the same company
Before writing this page we checked who owns each brand, and the answer changes how to read the list.
- L’Oréal owns four: Elvive, Redken, L’Oréal Professionnel and Kérastase.
- Henkel owns two: Olaplex, since July 2026, and Joico.
- K18 is part of Unilever.
So a good share of what looks like the whole category is how a single company labels its products. It explains, for instance, why citric acid shows up three times. No product comes out worse for it; it just gives you the context to read the list.
What we have not done
This page rests on a reading, not on a lab: the eight official pages set side by side and crossed with what science has published. Testing the treatments on hair is outside what we do, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The cross-reading, though, is something no single label carries.
An at-home treatment keeps up what your colorist achieved at the salon, but it does not replace having them look at your hair. If pieces of hair are left in your brush when you brush it, show them before buying anything.
What people ask
Olaplex or K18?
They do different things and are used at different moments. Olaplex No.3PLUS goes on before shampoo, is rinsed out, and its page does not say which bonds it repairs. K18 is left in and names the ones it says it reconnects: protein chains and sulfur bridges. An independent study tested K18 and Olaplex No.0, which carries the same ingredient, and saw them act differently: one inside the fiber, the other as a layer on the outside. If your hair has just been bleached, K18 is the one its brand recommends for those first washes.
Does this replace the bond treatment at the salon?
No, and it does not try to. The bond protector used during bleaching is a different product: your colorist adds it to the bowl at the salon. These eight are for home, and their instructions are for the shower or damp hair. Their job is to hold on to what the salon achieved, between appointments. And if your wet hair stretches and does not spring back, or comes away in pieces in the brush, show it to your colorist before buying anything.
What happened to Olaplex No.3?
Olaplex has replaced it on its site with No.3PLUS. Its own blog says so: No.3PLUS replaces the original No.3. It presents it as a new three-minute formula, where the old one asked for three to ten. Shops may still have the classic No.3, but if you buy online check the name: one of its old Amazon listings already shows the new product under the old title.
Do they really repair hair bonds?
Independent science does not agree. A 2021 study tested the chemical family of the Olaplex ingredient on bleached hair and found no more sulfur bridges inside the fiber, though it left the outer layer open. Another from 2024 tested Olaplex No.0 and did find more. What both saw is that treated hair changes, on the outside or inside. Getting back the hair you had before bleaching is something else.
Does citric acid repair bonds?
Three of these eight put it at the center of their claim: L'Oréal Paris, Redken and Kérastase, three L'Oréal products. A study by L'Oréal researchers on citric acid, without testing any specific product, puts the improvement down, probably, to a mix of mechanisms, among them removing calcium, pH and strengthening the weaker, non-covalent links. It measures a firmer fiber that survives more repeated strain before breaking. Its abstract does not mention sulfur bridges, and repairing bonds, as the labels of those three promise, is a bigger claim.
Does L'Oréal Bond Repair do the same as Olaplex?
They do not carry the same ingredient. Olaplex uses a maleic acid derivative; the L'Oréal Paris pre-shampoo rests its claim on citric acid. The brand in Spain says its routine is as effective as an Olaplex one, but that routine includes the No.3 Olaplex has since replaced, and the comparison was made with three products. It is the drugstore-priced one and sells under a different name by country: Elvive, EverPure or Elseve.
Before or after shampoo, and for how long?
It depends on the bottle, and this list has everything. Three go on before shampoo: Olaplex, Kérastase and the L'Oréal Paris one, for three to five minutes. Two are quick rinse-offs: Joico, seven seconds, and the L'Oréal Professionnel serum, one or two minutes after shampoo. And three are left in: K18, Redken and Living Proof, which also asks you to wait ten minutes before drying. If your hair was bleached recently, the routine is set by whoever did it.
